Why The Machines Are Winning


This new thing, the Internet, is really just an electronic version of one of humankind’s oldest social inventions: the marketplace. Not a variation of the business world’s hopped-up pervasive global market, but an electronic reinvention of the oldest form of the gathering and interacting of people, goods, and services: the centralized, open-air, public marketplace. The fact that it’s now no longer centralized but distributed, indoors instead of out, and accessed privately and not publicly is irrelevant to its basic functions for both business and society.
