Artificial Intelligence: the Abstraction That Couldn’t

In a very real sense, traditional artificial intelligence (AI) is a failed thought experiment. The idea that you could have an isolated, bodiless intelligence—without personhood and consciousness—is nonsense. AI’s original idea was, simply, to implement an abstract intelligence. Say that again and look at it closely. How can you possibly claim the ability to make an abstraction real? This particular abstraction was never really more than a thought experiment, which failed because it was fatally flawed.
