Internet Lie #11

Most Internet Content Is Useful

This belief denies the Internet is the greatest time waster ever invented. That denial is why people buy into the big lie that most Internet content is useful.

It’s not. What it is, what you can find on the Internet, is mostly what’s popular. In any context other than the present moment, what’s popular is—and has always been—crap. Add time to the hottest fad, and you have crap.

If you’ve been reading this blog, you know that what’s on the Internet is really only what you can find with a search engine. So not everything is crap; just most of what you find. The 80/20 rule doesn’t apply here. A long time ago a very wise man (Theodore Sturgeon) said, “90 per cent of everything is crap.” For many, the Internet claims to be everything. But a lot more than 90 percent of what you find there is crap.
