Phish of the Year

If you look to the right under PAGES, there’s a link to Phish of the Month. To learn more about Phish, try Wikipedia. To protect yourself, to avoid being phished: look before you click.

When you click on a link (or a graphic saying, Click Here), you go some place on the Internet. But is it where you think it is (or where they say it is)? Here’s how to find out before you get caught.

Where this click will take you, its address on the Internet, is called a URL (Uniform Resource Locator). What you see in the email may look legitimate (e.g., Like a fisherman’s lure, it’s supposed to look real.

If you’re not sure, it’s easy to see where the click will take you. Just move the cursor over the link. A small window appears with the actual URL—where you go if you’re foolish enough to click.

URLs can be confusing to read, but what you’re looking for is the higher level domain name (.com, .net, .org, .us, etc.), It’s either on the far right or before the first slash (/) from the left. In the graphic above it’s not the .com but the .ru—for Russia!

Very often phishes come not from the common .com, but from various countries: .de for Germany, .cn for China, .ng for Nigeria, and so on. If the email says it’s from Chase Bank, the links should not be from a another country.

An email phish can have many links and some will be legitimate. But it only takes one phony link to catch you. Look before you click.

And now (drum roll, please) The Phish of the Year: From Russia with Extra Cheese. It’s a total of seven pizzas and thirty drinks. All for only 195.23$ The phish, of course, is to get you to click on the link.
